Do you have neck pain after a car accident?

Do you have neck pain after a car accident?

If you were in a car accident recently, it is a good idea to get checked by a chiropractor. It may even be covered by your car insurance if you live in the greater Denver area.

It's very common that after a car accident you don't feel any pain. Because there is so much shock and adrenaline in your body, it is normal to not notice pain right away. However, that doesn't mean that everything is fine! You may start to feel the pain creep up in the days or weeks after the accident. This is because it takes a few days for the adrenaline to wear off, and once it does, you start to notice the impact on your muscles, even if it a was a minor car accident.

Why do car accidents cause neck and back pain?

Car accidents deliver a great amount of force to your muscles. Even if you are strong and healthy, a lot of impact on your muscles from a car accident can leave you in a great deal of pain. This is because the muscles, ligaments, and tendons may get damaged and react in a way that may cause pain. Muscles, ligaments, and tendons work together to hold the bones of your neck together in a balanced way. In a car accident, they can get damaged even from a minor fender bender and can result in long-term pain and consequences if not dealt with right away. If the muscles and ligaments are damaged, this can result in misalignments of the bones of the spine which can then lead to numbness or tingling in your arm or hands. You may also experience numbness or tingling in your face, hips, or legs, depending on where the damage is.

How can chiropractic help me after an accident?

After an accident, a chiropractor will do a thorough examination of your musculoskeletal system. This means that they will check everything in your neck, shoulders, back, and hips, to see if anything has been damaged or misaligned from the car accident. Once they have completed their exam, they may choose to take x-rays to see exactly what is going on. From there, the chiropractor will have a lot of information to create the best treatment plan for you and your situation. This may include gentle adjustments to the spine, neck, shoulders, hips, even wrists, knees, and ankles. They will also include some type of muscle work and soft tissue therapy to help alleviate pain in the tight muscles and stiff joints. Chiropractors are specialists if the spine, so they know best when it comes to understanding what is wrong from the car accident.

Does my insurance cover chiropractic care?

Colorado law requires that you be given the option to buy $5,000-$25,000 in medical coverage at the time you buy your car insurance. This coverage is called Med Pay and it is specifically to cover medical expenses after a car accident, including chiropractic care. So, if you are living in the greater Denver area, Westminster, Broomfield, Arvada, or Thornton, you most likely have a policy on your car insurance that covers medical expenses due to an auto accident. You may not even know that you have this, so if you were in a car accident, it's a good idea to call your insurance and specifically ask them if you have Med Pay and how much.
